"Of all the means of expression, photography is the only one that fixes a precise moment in time." (Henri Cartier-Bresson)

About Frank Shunkan

born and raised in Cologne, Germany

started to work as a photo assistant at the C.D.Geissler studio, (a famous still life photographer), then worked for several others in different branches, such as fashion photography and architecture. Since then free lancer for advertising agencies and magazines as well as working on different art projects (See exhibition list below). He has lived in Japan from 11/1997 to 5/1998 and in San Diego, California from 1/2015 to 12/2018. He lives and works in Berlin and Cologne now.

The artist has a strong affinity for Asian giga-cities like Tokyo or Seoul, especially Tokyo, the largest Japanese metropolis, whith its skyscrapers spreading towards the sky and its ever growing population, its cityscape seemingly sprawling past the horizon. Frank Shunkan is influenced by movies such as Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" (1982), which is based on the Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", or Mamoru Oshii's classic anime "Ghost in the Shell" (攻殻機動隊/1995). His fascination with the dystopian version of a remote reality meets the spectator's eye in most of his more recent works exhibited on the photomic website.
